What Is a Stump Grinder?

A stump grinder is a high-powered machine specially designed to remove tree stumps from the ground. Depending on its size and model, it features a unique appearance reminiscent of a combination of a lawnmower and a circular saw.
It is simply driven up to the stump, then grinds the stump down into small wood chips. Stump grinders endure heavy-duty, high-intensity working conditions, so rigorous routine maintenance is required to ensure safe and continuous operation.

How Does Stump Grinding Work?

A stump grinder breaks down the leftover stump after a tree is felled. All stump grinders rely on a powerful rotating cutter wheel that tears into the wood as it spins. Sharp cutter teeth shred the stump into fine wood chips. The operator moves the cutting wheel across the entire stump surface, grinding the wood down into chips and reducing the stump to well below ground level.

What Happens to Stump Wood After Grinding?

Stump grinding produces a large quantity of wood chips — far more than most people expect. These chips can be reused on-site as mulch or disposed of as green waste. Grinding leaves a hollow cavity where the stump once stood. You can fill the hole with the wood chips to decompose naturally, or add fresh soil to level the area with the surrounding ground.
The DSG61 stump grinder directly mounts to a tractor’s 3-point hitch system. It features a massive 24″ (61 cm) diameter solid steel grinding flywheel fitted with 34 tungsten carbide cutting teeth, making tree stump removal effortless and efficient.
This heavy-duty stump grinder is engineered to match tractors with 15–45 HP PTO output. It can grind stumps up to 14 inches below ground level; cutting depth above ground is also adjustable depending on tractor performance.
Built with a chainsaw holder for convenient transport across your property. The LEOMECH DSG61 is also compatible with quick-attach systems, allowing fast, simple connection for tractors equipped with a quick-attach receiver.
